Why Isn't My Website Ranking on Google? US Guide
Intro
“Why isn’t my website ranking on Google?” usually gets asked by two very different business owners, and most guides answer it as if they’re the same person.
One just launched a site and can’t understand why nothing’s happening yet. The other has had solid rankings for years and watched them fall off a cliff in the last few weeks. A third has rankings that look fine on paper and traffic that’s gone quiet anyway. Handing all three the same 15-item checklist wastes their time, because the real cause for each one lives in a different place.
So this isn’t a checklist. It’s a branch. Find which of the three situations matches yours, then go straight to the small number of causes that actually explain it.
Key takeaways
- A brand-new site with no rankings and an established site that just dropped are different problems with different causes. Don’t run the same checklist for both.
- New sites: check indexing first, then accept that ranking takes months, not days.
- Established sites that dropped: check the date of the drop against Google’s algorithm update history, then check what changed on the site around that same date.
- Ranking fine but no traffic: check whether an AI Overview is answering the query before anyone reaches your listing.
- Duplicate content from URL parameters and stale conversion tracking are two of the quietest site-wide problems, and neither announces itself.
- A ranking isn’t the finish line. Leads and inquiries are. Measure through to those, not just position.
Which situation are you actually in?
Start by identifying which of three situations describes your site, because the fix branches from here.
Situation one: a new site with no rankings at all. The site is live, submitted, maybe a few months old, and sits nowhere for the terms that matter. Situation two: an established site that just dropped. Rankings were solid for months or years, and something changed recently, sometimes overnight. Situation three: you’re ranking, but the traffic isn’t showing up. Search Console shows a page-one position and the click-through numbers don’t match what that position should bring.
Each one gets its own section below. Skip to yours.
Situation one: my new website isn’t ranking at all
A new site with zero rankings almost always comes down to one of two things: it isn’t indexed yet, or it hasn’t had the time ranking actually takes.
Check indexing first, every time. If Google hasn’t indexed a page, nothing else matters, because the page doesn’t exist as far as search is concerned. Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If your pages come back, you’re indexed. If nothing shows, or key pages are missing, Google Search Console’s Page Indexing report will tell you exactly why a page was excluded, whether that’s a stray noindex tag, a robots.txt file blocking crawlers, or a page Google simply hasn’t found yet because nothing links to it.
We see the noindex version constantly after a site relaunch. A tag that was correct on the staging environment quietly ships to the live site, and a business assumes its SEO stopped working when really Google was told, explicitly, not to look.
If you’re indexed, the honest next question is whether it’s simply too soon. Indexing can happen within days. Ranking for easy, low-competition phrases can follow within a few weeks. Anything genuinely competitive, the searches your actual buyers make, tends to take three to nine months to climb, longer in a crowded US category with established national competitors already sitting on page one. New domains also earn trust slowly regardless of content quality, so a young site is working uphill no matter how good the writing is.
“Give it time” is both a genuine answer and the easiest excuse in the industry, so treat it as a box to check, not a place to start. If your site is a few weeks old, patience is a real part of the plan. If it’s approaching a year old and still nowhere, time has stopped being the explanation and it’s worth working through situation two below, because the same technical and content causes apply to a site that never got off the ground as to one that fell off one.
Situation two: my established website’s ranking suddenly dropped
A sudden drop on a site with a real ranking history points somewhere different than a new site problem, and the date of the drop is usually the fastest clue you have.
Pull up the Performance report in Google Search Console and find the exact date clicks or impressions fell. Then check that date against two things: Google’s own search status dashboard and ranking update history, and your own list of anything that changed on the site around that time.
Four causes explain most sudden drops on an established site:
A broad algorithm update. Google runs core updates and smaller targeted updates through the year, and they can reward or penalise sites that didn’t do anything differently, only that Google’s read on quality shifted under them. If your drop date lines up with a confirmed update, the fix is usually about content quality and genuine expertise signals across the site, not a single broken page.
A technical fault introduced by a recent change. A redesign, a new checkout flow, a CMS migration, or even a routine plugin update can silently break something. The most common version we see is duplicate content from URL parameters: session IDs, tracking tags, or filter combinations on an e-commerce site generating dozens of near-identical URLs that Google now has to sort through instead of your one real page, the same faceted-navigation problem covered in our ecommerce SEO checklist. A close second is a redirect chain left behind after a URL structure change, where old links now bounce through two or three hops before landing, quietly bleeding authority at every jump.
Lost backlinks. If a partner site redesigned and dropped a page linking to you, or a directory you relied on went offline, the authority that page was passing simply stops. This one is slower and quieter than the others, so it’s worth checking your backlink history for a cliff that lines up with the drop date.
A stronger competitor, not a weaker you. Sometimes nothing on your site changed at all. A competitor published a genuinely better resource, earned links you didn’t, or simply outspent you on content for a season. This is the least satisfying answer and also the most common one once the first three are ruled out.
Situation three: I’m ranking, but I’m not getting traffic
This is the newest of the three problems, and it’s the one most older SEO advice doesn’t address at all.
You can hold a genuine page-one position and still see almost no clicks, because Google’s AI Overviews now answer a large share of queries directly above the traditional results. The searcher gets an answer without scrolling to a single blue link, so your ranking is real and the traffic isn’t coming anyway.
The old goal was ranking first. The current goal alongside it is being the source an AI Overview actually cites, because a cited page keeps earning clicks from a query where an uncited page-one link often gets none. Check whether an AI Overview appears for your key search terms, and if it does, check whether your site is the one it names as a source.
If it isn’t, the fix isn’t chasing a higher position you may already hold. It’s making your content genuinely extractable: a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the relevant section, clear headings that match the question being asked, and specific factual claims an AI system can lift cleanly instead of vague marketing language it can’t quote.
Is a technical problem quietly capping all three situations?
Regardless of which situation applies, three technical factors sit underneath everything above and rarely get checked until the content and authority questions come up empty.
Core Web Vitals, Google’s measure of loading speed, responsiveness, and visual stability, still function as a page experience input. The current thresholds worth knowing: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. A page that misses these badly enough loses both search visibility and the mobile visitors who won’t wait around.
Mobile experience matters because Google indexes and ranks based on the mobile version of your site by default, so a desktop-first build that’s awkward or slow on a phone is being judged on its worst version, not its best.
Crawlability rounds it out. A clean site structure, an accurate sitemap, and no accidental blocks in robots.txt make sure Google can actually reach and understand every page worth ranking. None of these three carries a weak page on its own, but any one of them can quietly cap a strong one, which is why we check them on every account regardless of which of the three situations brought the client to us in the first place.
How red&white diagnoses a ranking problem
Every SEO engagement starts with the same order of operations, because guessing at the cause wastes a client’s budget on the wrong fix. We confirm indexing and crawlability first, since nothing downstream matters if Google can’t see the page. Then we pull the Search Console history to date any drop precisely, cross-check it against known algorithm update windows, and audit for the technical issues, duplicate URLs, redirect chains, and Core Web Vitals failures, that most often explain a sudden change on an established site. Only once those are ruled out do we move to content and authority, because a strong page can still lose to thin content or a weak backlink profile even when everything technical checks out clean.
That order matters more than any individual fix. A business that jumps straight to “write more content” without first confirming the page is even indexed is optimizing something Google was never going to show anyone. And if the honest answer is that ranking has never really been the problem, is SEO worth it for small business in 2026? is worth reading before spending more on either channel.
The same diagnostic mindset applies once a site is ranking across several US locations, not just one. If that’s your situation, our guide to local SEO for multi-location businesses covers the added layer that a single-location diagnosis doesn’t need to worry about.
Our Essential SEO & AEO package starts at $1,395 a month and includes exactly this kind of technical diagnosis alongside the ongoing content and authority work, because a one-off audit without follow-through tends to catch the problem and then let it recur.
The bottom line
Stop running one generic checklist against a problem that’s actually one of three different problems. If your site is new, confirm it’s indexed, then accept the months ranking genuinely takes. If an established site just dropped, date the drop and check it against algorithm updates, technical changes, and lost backlinks in that order. If you’re ranking but the traffic isn’t following, check whether an AI Overview is intercepting the click before you chase a higher position you may not need.
And whichever situation you’re in, keep the finish line honest. A ranking is a means, not the result. The number that actually matters is inquiries, so measure through to those instead of admiring a position that isn’t sending you anyone.

Questions.
Why is my website not ranking on Google?
It depends which situation you're in. A brand-new site is usually just too young to have earned trust yet. An established site that suddenly dropped almost always points to a technical fault, a lost batch of backlinks, or an algorithm update. And a site that still ranks but gets no traffic is often losing the click to an AI Overview before anyone scrolls down to it.
How long does it take a new website to rank on Google?
Indexing can happen within days. Ranking for easy, low-competition terms can follow within weeks. Anything genuinely competitive takes three to nine months, sometimes closer to a year in a crowded US category. A new site sitting low after a month isn't broken, it's early.
Why did my website's Google ranking suddenly drop?
A sudden drop on an established site is a different problem than a new site never ranking in the first place. The usual causes are a broad Google algorithm update, a technical fault introduced by a recent site change, a batch of backlinks that disappeared, or a competitor simply outbuilding you. Check Google Search Console's performance report first to confirm when the drop happened, since the date usually points straight at the cause.
My website ranks on Google but I'm still not getting traffic. Why?
In 2026 this is common enough to be its own category. An AI Overview can answer the searcher's question directly above the results, so a page-one ranking never gets seen or clicked. The fix isn't ranking higher, it's making your content the source the AI Overview actually cites.
How do I check if my website is indexed by Google?
Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If your pages come back, you're indexed. If nothing shows, or key pages are missing, check Google Search Console's Page Indexing report, which tells you the exact reason a page was excluded and lets you request indexing directly.
